San Francisco, CA (January 17, 2013) – Top San Francisco salons have partnered to celebrate the life of Vidal Sassoon, one of the hair industries most influential and innovative artists, with VS85.
This first annual event will host guests on Vidal Sassoon’s birthday; Thursday, January 17, 2013 between 7pm – 11pm at The Green Room in San Francisco, CA. In the spirit of celebrating life, guests will enjoy good food, good drinks, good music and a showcase of what Vidal Sassoon lived and breathed: Great Hairstyles. The Green Room will provide the backdrop for a runway presentation of models wearing wigs of Vidal Sassoon inspired hairstyles, which will also be up for auction. Participating San Francisco salons will be cutting and styling the wigs presented and up for live and silent auction. The event will also host a silent auction of fun and unique prizes, showcase live musicians, and have fun and inspiring event activities for guests to enjoy.
Inspired by Mr Sassoon’s philanthropic contributions, VS85 will raise donations and awareness to Project Open Hand, a San Francisco non-profit that provides meals and groceries for people living with HIV/AIDS, homebound critical illnesses and seniors in San Francisco County. As a local organization that has been providing services for over 60 years, Project Open Hand is the perfect partner and beneficiary to raise awareness for. With so many hair and beauty salons in San Francisco event organizers want to start an annual event with the objective to unify the industry. What better way to come together than to celebrate an icon on his birthday and remember what he has done to inspire all of us in the industry? VS85 invites anyone and everyone who wants to celebrate the life of a true legend, Vidal Sassoon, and give back to a great cause.

Designers In Residence Program

Fashion Incubator San Francisco at Macy’s Union Square provides six emerging San Francisco-based apparel designers with the resources — including work space, curriculum, and mentoring — to launch their careers in fashion.

Throughout the course of a year, the Designers in Residence (DIR) are required to complete a mandatory core curriculum focused on business development and garment production. Conducted at both the Incubator location at Macy’s Union Square as well as at off-site locations, these workshops are essential to the FISF program and attendance is required. At the time of acceptance, a calendar with proposed monthly workshop dates will be provided. These dates are subject to change, and the DIR adjust their schedules accordingly.

Fashion News: Spotlight on Carine Roitfeld

[ Photo Credit: Getty Images ]

  • Two of my favorite words:  Visionary and Power.

The Carine Roitfeld name is often used in context with these words.  Visionary and Power.

Since her departure from Vogue Paris and Condé Nast she has taken the limelight by storm in the media, in the fashion world and in business.  I knew she was ready when she set up shop in New York City.  If there is a place for re-invention and opportunity it is the NYC. The launch of her biannual, CR Fashion Bookis MORE than successful and fabulous, is it any wonder that Harper’s Bazaar and Hearst Publications (the direct competition to Vogue and Condé Nast publications) has come calling.

  • The Big News:

“Roitfeld will produce a limited amount of editorials for the magazine to run across world wide editions, it was announced today by David Carey, president, Hearst Magazines, and Duncan Edwards, president and CEO, Hearst Magazines International., on several stories a year starting in the March 2013 issues of all 26 international editions of BAZAAR, which have a combined audience of more than 11.3 million worldwide. Edwards commented, "This collaboration marks the first time anything like this has been done.”

She is a visionary in the fashion world and we are so happy to be working with her. “Carey said,” Hearst is the world’s largest publisher of monthly magazines, and we’re always looking for powerful ideas that can play out across the globe.

  • Final Look:

Roitfeld will continue to work on her various other projects. That’s how a Boss does it.

Nichelle first began her career in the fashion business with SFFAMA as a volunteer. The St. Louis Missouri native graduated with a Bachelors degree in Arts and Science from Webster University in her hometown and moved to California two years later to pursue a career in Human Resources.  Her passion for Fashion and style became a full on obsession and led her to seek out SFFAMA. Nichelle was appointed to the SFFAMA San Francisco Fashion Week committee and held a position as a Marketing Representative for events.  She became a staple at the SFFAMA San Francisco events and flew to New York for the launch of the Fashion+Tech New York [Fashion+TechSF] branch that opened in March 2012. Eager to learn more about Fashion and style from a design perspective, she moved to Milan. Although she has moved to Milan, Nichelle continues to work with SFFAMA as the Fashion Editor at Large.  She attended Fashion Week for Spring Summer 2013 in Milan and Paris trying her hand at Fashion photography for Street Style and attended Fashion Shows and events for Vogue Italia and Wunderkind.  Nichelle intends to pursue a Masters in Fashion Communications next year. Nichelle now wears a number of hats in her current post as Fashion Editor at Large for SFFAMA and she is curating her own blog fashionwhoreNY.blogspot.it, a daily symposium of Fashion news, celebrity, culture and inspirations.

Onassis Proves We Can Live in San Francisco and Still Dress with American Inspiration, European Style and Japanese Aesthetics All at the Same Time

Photos by: Owen Geronimo. Thanks to Mitch and his wonderful SF crew: Catelyn, Kyle, Victor & Michael ]

San Francisco’s menswear retail market just got a little more interesting with the new arrival of Onassis at 845 Market Street in the Westfield Centre.  If you missed the write up in WWDOnassis has been eyeing the West Coast and San Francisco, replete and overflowing with creative professionals and lots of discerning guys in Silicon Valley who can wear Japanese selvage jeans and a chesterfield coat to work every day, since they launched the lifestyle brand in 2010. The first location outside of New York, San Francisco is also the next step in a global expansion strategy which will see store openings in sophisticated and creative capitals across the US, Europe and Asia such as Boston, London and Berlin.

My own background is steeped in classic Americana, Japan and Europe, and the Onassis brand concept and product were love at first sight. With Global, Classic and Confident as a tag line, Onassis has small development teams working across several continents to create American-inspired designs with European styling and Japanese aesthetics and fabrics priced very nicely at the lower end of contemporary. The San Francisco location is currently stocked with smart, stylish wardrobe essentials, but will have the added benefit of exclusively tailored items and collections once Onassis familiarizes itself with the local San Francisco ethos and customer base. Asked about the possibility of locally manufactured products, Onassis store manager Mitch Silverstein promised to keep an eye open for new developments and craftwork in the San Francisco apparel and accessories industry.

I should also note that Onassis is ready and willing to take chances with experimental designs in their SoHo location and higher priced premium and “emotional” pieces at Rockefeller Center. So if you’re in the market for a discerning wardrobe upgrade, a perfect wool houndstooth 3 button blazer with working button holes or a perfect quilted leather vest or a perfect shrunken vest in Japanese fabrics and a perfect espresso in a cozy club-like lounge area, these precious things can all be yours at the new Onassis store in San Francisco.
