Ryzenberg On: Catwalk of Nations

[ PHOTOS: New York Times and UPI ]

After seven years of waiting, planning, spending and fighting, the London 2012 Olympics are finally here. The Opening Ceremonies were quite the spectacle celebrating the United Kingdom’s roots, achievements and rich history.

The festivities also stirred some controversy, (union workers parading along with human rights pioneers and socialized healthcare) but also painted a colorful and cheery image of a country mostly known for its empirical dominance throughout centuries.

Of course, no British homage would be complete without a little bit of The Beatles and Shakespeare. Sir Kenneth Branagh did the honors of reciting the opening scene of the ‘Tempest,’ which was also director Danny Boyle’s inspiration for the event.

Aside from time traveling, there was something that caught my attention even more, despite the fireworks, James Bond’s grand entrance, Mr. Bean and of course BECKS, — I am referring to the Parade of Nations.

For me, this is the highlight, the start of the two-week affair before the medals are won, the records are set and the doping makes headlines. This is the time when everyone smiles and struts their stuff with their best foot forward.

Some of the teams that stood out (for me):

Team USA: The Red, White and Blue will always be a highlight. With an enormous delegation present in almost every sport, it is nice to see the random fencer next to LeBron James, smiling and of course most likely asking for a picture. After the uniform fiasco came to light, (there I said it — our mea culpa for overseas manufacturing) Mr. Lauren said this would never happen again and for the next Olympics they will be made in the U.S of A! Aside from all the politics, the boys and girls looked their Friday night best and I look forward to watching them go all the way.

Brazil: They always bring joie de vivre no matter what they do, and of course a little bit of Carnaval comes a long way. Brazilians sure know how to make colorful duds (which of course include a lot of muscles and mini skirts) sexy — obrigado darlings! And if this is just a sneak peek, can’t wait for 2016 in Rio!

Czech Republic: Sartorially speaking, the Czechs certainly win the gold. I loved their literal interpretation of the gloomy weather London is known for! Wellies and umbrellas always come in handy in the city that houses Big Ben and Parliament.

Great Britain: The host nation went for the white and gold and looked quite dapper! After mixed reviews for the uniforms designed by Stella McCartney, the athletes are ready to compete and I enjoyed the minimalistic and almost monochromatic approach.

Now time to see the Speedos, track shorts and parade of scantly clad hotties!

Fashion and Art with Femme Cartel...Literally

  • Watch Maria’s interview, here.

  • Watch Laura’s interview, here.

A small venue for an art showing is more my thing. Where you get the opportunity to talk to the artists more intimately. The concept of this show is a literal take on the convergence of fashion and art. Though this is not new, it is very refreshing to see  fashion illustrations on the wall. Refreshing in a sense because it is not a fashion show. Especially in San Francisco, given the rise of less-than-average fashion shows that mostly don’t benefit the local fashion designers on a business level.

There was an excitement in the room while guests processed the various ideas of fashion art by: Elrod, Kathryn McFarlane, Eliza Frye, Reni Castro, Laura Gonzales, Maria Fatima Urbi, Thalia Stratton and Jonelle Marie.

The concept of fashion and art is something that’s dear to me as an artist myself who dabbled in fashion design in the past.  After all, fashion is an art form. But what I enjoyed the most about this show is the collaborative efforts of the women artists. It is very palpable and empowering. Props to Emily Howe & Christina Bohn of Femme Cartel, the fashionable hosts and curators of Fashionably Drawn.

BeGood Brings the Style to Socially Responsible Clothing in San Francisco

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) August 01, 2012

BeGood Clothing is the first fusion of San Francisco’s philanthropic culture and fashion sensibility. BeGood is a men’s and women’s socially responsible clothing store nestled in the heart of the Marina District on Union Street between Fillmore and Webster. It is opening its doors this Saturday August, 4th with spectacular sales. The store offers a dazzling selection of men’s and women’s fashion-forward apparel that supports a number of environmental and humanitarian causes. BeGood specializes in one for one sales, so a person or place in need will benefit from each purchase a customer makes. The store also donates a percentage of sales of certain items to support a number of non-profits in the Bay Area.

BeGood Clothing is opening its doors this weekend, Saturday, August 4th. The boutique touts itself as the first fusion of San Francisco’s philanthropic culture and fashion sensibility. It promises to be a socially responsible clothing store that will lead the pack in sustainability on an increasingly fashion-savvy Union Street. The store offers a dazzling selection of men’s and women’s apparel that supports a number of environmental and humanitarian causes at reasonable prices. Owners Dean Ramadan and Mark Spera have an eye for fashion and a heart for humanity.

BeGood handpicks clothing lines that team with charities or have their own model of giving back. From cheeky underwear of which sales benefit global eco-initiatives to dress shirts that provide books for children across Africa, BeGood’s clothing is Marina shopping at its finest. Clothing connoisseurs won’t compromise style to wear a cause on their sleeve.

The store features more than 35 designers and brands. Shoppers can find basics, fashionable evening outfits, and everything in between. For women, BeGood carries a host of tops, cardigans, dresses, skirts, and shorts in bright colors, prints, and more conventional neutrals. And of course, they also carry several jewelry lines to accent any outfit.

For men, BeGood carries hoodies, socks and tees, as well as a unique selection of beachwear, dressier evening sweaters, button-ups, polo shirts and ties. Men’s clothing runs the gambit of colorful-preppy to alternative. Men and women alike will love BeGood’s buy-one-give-one sunglasses, sandals and gifts.

In an effort to be socially responsible itself, BeGood lives by the old adage, “act locally, think globally.” The company supports local non-profits, participates in charitable events (like SF Aids Walk this past July), as well as donates customers’ gently used clothing to Goodwill monthly. Even the store itself is a shrine of sustainability; the floor is made of 100% recycled wood and the fixtures are all eco-friendly.

BeGood was founded on the premise that San Franciscans want their dollars to go further than the bank accounts of major apparel companies. BeGood personally teams with local charities and donates a percentage of the sales of certain clothing to support them. Each brand the store carries supports a different cause, so customers can feel good about the stylish threads they are wearing.

BeGood opens its doors Saturday, August 4th, 2012. Expect exclusive opening offers. For a list of brands that are carried at BeGood, visit http://www.begoodclothes.com or find us at http://www.facebook.com/begoodclothing & http://www.twitter.com/begoodclothing. Be sure to stop by this truly unique San Francisco clothing store, located at 2127 Union Street, San Francisco, CA 94123.

Gensler Presents : Spaces for Growth Project

Space has always been a concern in San Francisco, a city surrounded by hills, the ocean, and the bay, but even more as the city is becoming the nation’s innovation hub with burgeoning technology and digital media sectors. The city today faces declining vacancies and rising rents: expansion within the city limits increasingly becomes a challenge for firms. SFCED and Gensler paired to look for solutions to this growing problem.

We answer questions such as: Is the overheated market of the dot-com days returning? Are there spaces within San Francisco where evolving firms can expand? Where are these spaces? What can growth strategies in this context look like?

We evaluated spatial needs of technology companies, desirable neighborhood characteristics and availability across the city and found some amazing spaces that we want to share with the community. Meet up with other tech companies for beer, music, and some serious socializing and explore the new hot spots in San Francisco! BOOK/ RSVP Here.
