Peter Loc Tan Nguyen, by Lexie Tiongson

by Lexie Tiongson,  Originally Published in SOMA Magazine

Representing androgyny, Peter Loc Tan Nguyen’s collection defines the portrayal of masculinity and femininity brought into several pieces. Effortless, sophisticated, and understated are just a few words to describe the collection. As a recent graduate from Academy of Art University with a degree in both Fashion Design and Knitwear, Nguyen combines the two styles together to make a seemingly contemporary collection. To add a unique touch to his garments, Nguyen mounted knitwear pieces onto organza to make a more structural and sculptural feel. His purpose was to bring a new perspective to knitwear. Most of the textiles he used were made with an industrial machine to make a fine knit so that the knitwear aspect is disguised.

Some of his most memorable pieces include fine lines and structural cuts that convey the combination of masculinity and femininity he wishes is perceived from his inspiration of menswear. With a women’s ready-to-wear collection, Nguyen admits that he purposely used the construction of menswear and applied it in his designs.

“I wanted to explore what was inside of a menswear garment and translate it into a womenswear garment to play with masculinity but with feminine curves and fabrication,” Nguyen explains. With this aspect, his pieces definitely portray a balance of the two opposite characterizations. Nguyen believes that making his collection not so outrageous and expected distinguishes the feel and understanding of his fashion designs.
“I wanted to make a classic garment, but a piece that is simple and just illustrates what clothes are,” Nguyen articulates. In this mindset, his designs truly epitomize androgyny, making it something worthwhile, timeless and classic.

Nguyen is currently studying in Paris at Studio Berçot through Academy of Art University’s Sister City Scholarship Exchange. In 2010, he was the first place Council of Fashion Designers of America’s (CFDA) $10,000 Scholarship recipient. The money was used to fund his senior collection at Academy of Art University, which was shown at his graduate fashion show this past May. His collection was also just recently showcased at Vancouver Fashion Week as a part of a sponsorship through Vancouver Fashion Week’s producer Jamal Abdourahman.Hoping to stay in Europe for a few more years, Nguyen wants to see all parts of fashion, art and design, and eventually come back to San Francisco to establish his label. “As a designer, my goal is to express my perspective on fashion and design,” Nguyen concludes.

Sonas Denim is a new brand of eco-friendly, fashion forward jeans from San Francisco

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SAN FRANCISCO (Nov 23rd, 2011)

Sonas Denim is a new brand of eco-friendly, fashion forward jeans from San Francisco that are taking the city by storm.  Today, we launched our new signature line of patched jeans for men and women; they’re sexy, free spirited and so stylish they will wow even the most dedicated fashionistas.  Sonas jeans are the only eco-friendly jeans on the market with a portion of our line made from reclaimed denim and all products are made in California.  As dedicated animal lovers and having been involved in the animal rights community for the past 11 years, we vow never to use any animal products in our line and we will donate 10% of our net profits to animal rights groups such as Animal Rescue Media and Education.  See, http://arme.tv/

I was born in Ireland and was inspired to design these patched jeans after many years of travelling and attending festivals all over the world.  “The Burning Man” festival is my noted favorite and Blackrock Desert provided the occasion to be creative in designing my own pants!   I had countless people asking me where I got my jeans and where they could find them.  Also, my girlfriend kept encouraging me to wear them out in the City and not just for festivals.  After a few years of interest and enthusiasm over my patched denim, I decided to bring them to the world.  In response to the demand for something edgy and new, we created a variety of cuts and styles tailored to diverse tastes.  Our customers are typically young at heart, free spirited, fashion forward, confident, compassionate, conscious, and independent.

We are hoping to begin a revolution in the fashion industry.  We plan to motivate the fashion world with our confident, unique designs that express a lifestyle choice to be kind to animals and not to waste. When we say “Spread the Sonas,” we actually want to send a message to the public to pass on goodness and happiness to other living beings.  Sonas (Gaelic) Happiness, Felicity, Good Fortune, Bliss. We wanted to provide a thoughtful and socially responsible brand that could lead the industry by example following values that are true to our heart.  Our signature patchwork jeans are just the beginning.  We already have designed cruelty free sweaters, t-shirts and belts and accessories waiting down the pipeline for production.  All these ideas are constructed without taking the skin or fur off of anybody.

Our jeans are distinctive with their signature patchwork composition.  A small label in the back doesn’t differentiate our jeans from the rest.  It’s the lifestyle and substance of our entire brand that makes Sonas different.

We currently offer a diversity of design cuts for men and women including; skinny, straight, boot and flare. You can buy our jeans online at www.sonasdenim.com and at seven San Francisco stores including: ABS Fits, Rolo on Market, Rolo SOMA, RAG, Zeni Wear, Wonderland and P-Kok Planet.

About Sonas: Sonas Denim was founded by Gerry Kelly an Irish born festival enthusiast. Visit www.sonasdenim.com for more information.  You can follow us on Facebook at Sonas Denim of San Francisco and on Twitter @SonasDenim.

Unitedstyles – Design, share and buy your own fashion

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

    Shanghai, 9 November 2011

Unitedstyles - Design, share and buy your own fashion

Unitedstyles is a startup company aiming to revolutionize the fashion industry by introducing on-demand, consumer-generated fashion. It’s easy-to-use online tool enables you to design your very own clothes, instantly preview and share your designs in lifelike 3D images, and then buy them. Your totally unique creations are produced on a piece-by-piece basis – with the greenest technology available – and delivered to your doorstep anywhere in the world.

    How does it work?

The modular and expandable unitedstyles app uses breakthrough cross-platform technology to allow consumers to easily create their own one-of-a-kind fashion online. Users can select and combine styles, shapes, trim and colors as well as apply fully customizable prints, all in real-time. The resulting design can be previewed using state-of-the-art 3D online rendering software. This shows how the designed apparel will look and provides a great way to share it with friends and followers. Subsequently the user can have their self-designed fashion made especially for them by unitedstyles, making use of the latest digital fabric printing technologies.

“Itʼs actually long overdue that you can express your personal style by designing and buying your very own, totally unique fashion online,” says Dutch CEO, Xander Slager.

Fashion from push to pull – an industry upset Unitedstyles wants to radically change the fashion industryʼs business model from push to pull. It reverses the traditional way of doing business whereby companies design long in advance (guessing what their target consumers may like next year), then produce in mass, display in stores and, finally, wait for customers to buy.

Contrarily, unitedstyles utilizes the speed, global reach and virality of the Internet combined with cutting-edge virtualization techniques to democratize fashion by putting the designing power directly into the hands of the individual. Equally important, the normally huge stock risk for producers is eliminated by using on-demand production. Products are only made after a customer has ordered and already paid for them. While the current focus of unitedstyles is on women’s fashion, expansion into children’s clothing, sportswear and more is already being planned.

    Who is behind unitedstyles?

Unitedstyles was founded in Shanghai by 4 European entrepreneurs who have been living in China for many years. Their unique combination of backgrounds allowed them to develop the breakthrough idea of online consumer-generated fashion.  Xander Slager is a fashion industry veteran of 18 years. He founded and manages Spoom Coats, a womenʼs outerwear brand sold in 15+ countries, with design and production facilities in China.

Marc van der Chijs is a serial Internet entrepreneur best known for co-founding leading Chinese online video site, Tudou.com (Nasdaq: TUDO).  Joop Dorresteijn has a strong technical and programming background and worked at online game company Spil Games before co-founding unitedstyles.  Dirk Lorré is a renowned marketing consultant working for several Fortune 500 companies, with a focus on consumer marketing and psychology.

About unitedstyles (in 40 words) Unitedstyles is a Shanghai based startup company aiming to revolutionize the fashion industry.
